Wallace George Rupp

September 17, 1928 — September 25, 2016

Wallace George Rupp, beloved husband of Gloria Ashby, passed away of natural causes on September 25, 2016 at his home in Taylorsville, Utah. Wally was born to Floyd George Rupp and Lettie Elizabeth Todd on September 17, 1928 in Salt Lake County, Utah. His character was shaped by a childhood in Taylorsville, working on the family farm and enjoying the influence of the extended Rupp and Todd families. He and Gloria met while topping sugar beets during World War II and were married February 10, 1951 at Fort Riley, Kansas during his service in the U.S. Army. Their marriage was solemnized a month later in the Salt Lake Temple. Gloria and Wally were a wonderful couple beloved by all who knew them and recognized for their love and fierce loyalty to each other and to their family. Wally looked forward to being reunited with his bride and we are grateful they are together again. Dad was the ultimate example of hard work. He was primarily employed at the Amoco Oil Refinery, but always had side jobs including farming, working construction with his uncle Edgar, and helping his cousin Dean at the S&M Skating Rink. Even at age 88 he insisted on showing up daily to help sons Carl and Gordon at the Snowie shop. When not working, his two passions were scouting (where he served as scoutmaster for 51 years and went on thirty-eight 50-mile hikes in the Uinta mountains) and hunting. It is hard to imagine anyone who enjoyed chasing upland game birds more than Dad. While his hobbies and service are noteworthy, his real focus was on his beloved wife Gloria and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. None of us ever left his home not knowing that we were loved and appreciated (even if we did need a little work). Dad was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved being a scoutmaster and served in that calling as long as he was able. Fortunately, that assignment was augmented and eventually replaced by service at the Jordan River Temple. He gave his children an example of hard work, service, and attention to duty. The fruits of those teachings include all nine children serving missions, all eight sons earning Eagle Scout awards, and Gayle earning her Young Womanhood Recognition Award. His influence has sunk deep into rising generations, blessing each of his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren with an honorable heritage and heroic example. Wally is survived by his nine children; Stephen, Larry, Darrell, Carl, Lyle, Gayle, Norman, Gordon, and Aaron and their families. He is further survived by his sister Joanne. He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria; parents brother Keith; sister Jerolyn; and granddaughter Debby Rupp Funeral services will be held Friday, September 30, 2016, 11:00 a.m., at Taylorsville North Central Stake, 3120 West 4700 South. Viewings will be held Thursday, September 29th, 6-8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and again prior to services at the church from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park, 4400 West 4100 South.
