Winifred Maomi Morse McLachlan

"Wonderful Mother and Passionate Genealogist" Winifred Naomi Morse McLachlan peacefully passed through the veil Friday May 8, 2015 at 1:02 pm. surrounded by her family. Winifred was born June 16, 1924 in Mount Carmel, PA. She was married to James West McLachlan August 18, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple of the LDS Church. Winifred McLachlan was a mother, grandmother, author, and avid genealogist. She grew up in Bloomfield, NJ during the depression and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1942. She continued her education during World II. She had a tremendous sense of public responsibility and decided to study nursing and graduated from in 1947 in Health Education and Nursing from Jersey State College and the Jersey City Medical Center. During the war she served in the Cadet Nurses Corps. As a young girl in 1938 she discovered a copy of The Book of Mormon in the Bloomfield Public Library. She read it and requested to meet with the Mormon missionaries. In deference to the wishes of her family she put off baptism until 1945. In 1948 she moved to Utah where she met and married the love of her life James West McLachlan in 1950. They were together until his death in 2007 and are now reunited. In her almost 40 years as a nurse in Utah she worked at the VA hospital, as a visiting and school nurse in Taylorsville and Granger, and finally as a Nursing Supervisor for Salt Lake County. All her life she had a passion for genealogy. She authored several books on the history of her family including "William McLachlan: Mormon Patriarch and His Family" for which she received the award for "Best Family History" from Brigham Young University in 1987. In 1986 she was awarded a Masters Degree in Family History from BYU. She is survived by her sister, Mary Ellen Branin; children: Naoma Tate, Cody, WY; Elaine (Marty) Crapo, Holladay; James Morse (Carrie) McLachlan, Silva, NC; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; special friend, Lavina Harper. Preceded in death by parents; Wilbert and Emily Morse; son-in-law, Hal Tate; brother-in-law, Ed Branin.. Funeral services will be held Friday, 11:00am. at the Holladay 3rd Ward, 4568 S. Holladay Blvd. A viewing will be held Thurs., 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Rd. and Friday at the church, 9:30-10:45. prior to service. Interment, Taylorsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your local American Diabetes Association or the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody, WY. Place of Birth:Mt.
