Sandy, Utah - Yvonne Muir Gardner Heugly, passed away peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness while residing at Sunrise Assisted Living, Sandy, Utah, on Friday, October 21, 2022. Her life was devoted to her large family and friends and to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served four full time proselyting missions: Pennsylvania, New Zealand, Mongolia, and Tennessee. She attended the University of Utah prior to her marriage to Bert R. Gardner (later divorced).
After moving to Kailua, Hawaii, Yvonne attended the Church College of Hawaii, graduating as the valedictorian of her class. Following her divorce, she returned with her seven children to Taylorsville, Utah, where she was born and raised. She taught school for five years before marrying Shirly Lorenzo Heugly (East Millcreek), who was a wonderful and beloved husband, father figure and grandfather to Yvonne's children and grandchildren for over 23 years. Yvonne loved Shirl's family and they have been so good to her. Yvonne delighted in her role as a grandmother to Shirl's wonderful grandchildren. Together they served a full-time mission in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and then as temple workers in the Salt Lake Temple for many years.
Yvonne was never happier than when she was testifying of Jesus Christ, fulfilling callings as a hostess at the Joseph Smith Building and at the Conference Center or as a guide on Temple Square. She was truly a people person. She never met a stranger. She will be remembered for the inspiring programs she presented across the Wasatch Front in wards, stakes, and care centers as well as on her full-time missions. Many will remember her puppet shows and her favorite sidekick, the ventriloquist dummy, Elder Cornelius.
Our family wants to thank Sunrise Assisted Living of Sandy for their love and support of our mother and sensitivity to her family while she was a resident of the memory care unit, and especially as they gently attended to her palliative care in the final days of her life. We also express our gratitude to Inspiration Hospice for their timely support.
Yvonne is survived by her children: Randall (Becky) Gardner, Dennis (Sherrie) Gardner, Karen (Craig) Herzog, Glenn (Nancy) Gardner, Valerie Gardner, Mark (Alaine) Gardner and Paul (LeeAnn) Gardner; 25 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, Barlow F. Muir and Merle Strong Muir; her husband, Shirl Lorenzo Heugly; and her only sister, Joyce (David) McDougal.
