Dorothy Caroline Salazar, age 94, passed away peacefully in her home in Kearns, Utah surrounded by her family on August 23, 2021.

Mom was born April 15, 1927 in Salida, Colorado. The daughter of Manuel and Ramona Chavez, she was the oldest of twelve siblings.

Mom was married to Aladino Gurule’ and then later to Alexander Gene Salazar (her Lavito).

She was an amazing woman who despite life’s challenges dedicated her life to helping others and to finding joy in God, family, community and in life. For 37 years she taught English as a second language at Guadalupe School and was awarded teacher of the year. Throughout her career, she was recognized by the Latino community and likely considered a hero by many. She was an incredible self-taught painter and also loved, reading, teaching and going on long walks while singing her favorite hymns.

She is survived by her children Leroy Gurule’, Betty Gurule’, Thomas Gurule’, Ron Gurule’, Michael Gurule’, Duaine (Ina) Salazar; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren…too many to mention.

She is preceded by her husband Alexander Gene Salazar; and her children Martha Ann Gurule’, Arlene Gurule’, James Gurule’, Patricia Gurule’, and Sammy Gurule’.

Our family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Summit Senior Center and  Harmony Hospice Care. A very special thank you to her nurse Jody from Harmony.

Services:

Viewing will be held at McDougal Funeral Home on Sunday, August 29, 2021 from 6pm to 8pm, 4330 South Redwood Rd., Taylorsville, Utah 84123. Services will be held Monday, August 30, 2021 at 12:00 pm at Centro De Vida Cristiana (Christian Life Church) located at 1055 North Redwood Rd, Salt Lake City, Utah 84116.
