Loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, Gary G. Hutchings, 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Taylorsville, Utah on December 13, 2018 due to cancer. Gary was born to Theodore Hutchings and Joyce Page Grover on September 6, 1940 in Murray, Utah.
Gary was raised in South Jordan and Riverton, Utah. He graduated from Jordan High School. He was an active member and served in many church callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he proudly served a mission to Canada. He married the love of his life Joyce Turner Hutchings on March 4, 1964. They met at a dance and he knew then and there that he was going to marry the farmer’s daughter Joyce. He made sure everyone knew how much he loved his wife; 55 years later and they are still known as the Lovebirds.
Gary took pride in his work as a custodian. He spent many hours making sure everything was cleaned to perfection at Valley Jr. High, Sherman Elementary, Morningside Elementary and also the Administration Building for The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Gary proudly served in the Utah National Guard for 35 years. Some of his highlights was being a heavy equipment operator helping with shaping the grounds for the parks around the valley work, around Jordanelle Reservoir. In Panama he helped with construction of roads and twice he was able to go to Honduras and build a bridge and a school. Gary really enjoyed his retirement years traveling with his sweetheart all over the world. His final trip on a cruise to Hawaii was like a second honeymoon!
Gary had many passions including woodwork, leather work, studying, gardening, exercising, hiking with his family and riding his bicycle and would oftentimes sneak away for a “short” ride (and sometimes be gone for hours). In his retirement he went back to school at SLCC and built all the cabinets in their kitchen and around the house. He also joined in the building of houses with SLCC. He enjoyed anything in the great outdoors: camping, fishing and hiking with his wife and family. There were many fun camping trips up to Echo Reservoir, The Uintah’s, Fillmore Canyon, Yellowstone, Topaz Mountain riding motorcycles and anywhere he could catch a fish.
Gary always had a smile on his face and tried to make everything good. He loved and lived life to the fullest. Gary was a great example of service. If anyone of us needed any help he was right there to help. Exercising was very important to Gary so in his honor please get out and exercise.
Family was everything to Gary and he was everything to us!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Hutchings, Joyce Page Grover and Birdie Hutchings. He is survived by his wife Joyce Turner Hutchings; children Galen & Kristi Hutchings, Jennifer Davis, Jason Hutchings and Julie Jackson; and his grandchildren, Mylea Owens, Keisha (Crystal) Lewis, Jacob (Hannah) Hutchings, Jordan Hutchings, Katelyn Hutchings, Chelsea Davis, Makayla Davis, Gabriela Hutchings, Andrew Smith, Kylie Smith; and his great-grandchildren Aiden Lewis, Dezmond Hutchings and Kyrie Hutchings. He is also survived by his brother Juan (Juanda) Hutchings; sister Gloria (Vere) Berrett; and Gary’s twin sister Gayle (Tom) Dimond.
