Michael Allen Christensen

Michael Allen Christensen, 72, passed away November 30, 2018 at home. He spent the weeks leading up to his passing surrounded by cherished family and friends.

Born March 8, 1946 in Murray, Utah, he was the third son and fourth child born to Leon and Marie Christensen. Michael had seven siblings: Linda, Ray, David, Cheryl, Valaine, Richard, and Connie.

Michael served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Peru where he fell in love with the people and culture of Latin America. During his mission, he received a single letter from a young woman named Helen Dominguez from a Spanish speaking congregation in Midvale, Utah, but never responded. Within a few weeks of returning home from missionary service, Michael reported to Camp Pendleton to begin infantry training with the United States Marine Corps. Upon completion of infantry training, Michael deployed to Quang Tri, Vietnam where he would spend the next several months. While there, he received another letter from the same young woman who wrote to him on his mission. This time around, Michael paid more attention and for the next several months, Michael and Helen wrote letters back and forth for the duration of his service in Vietnam. Shortly before leaving Vietnam to return home, Michael purchased a ring and sent a letter asking Helen Dominguez to marry him. They married on March 15, 1971, shortly after completing his military service. Together they settled and raised their family in Kearns, Utah.

Michael was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved serving in his community and was quick to help anyone who needed assistance. He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent most of his adult life serving as either Financial Clerk or Executive Secretary in the wards he attended.

Michael is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen; his children Michael Rey (Jill), JoLayne (David Herman) and Melissa. He also has 4 grandchildren through his son Michael: Jared, Audrey, Samuel, and Grace Christensen. In death, he reunited with his youngest son, Jonathan. He loved all his children and grandchildren and taught them many lessons by his example, but the most important one he taught them was to be kind and selfless in serving others.

Preceded in death by his parents Leon and Marie, his youngest son Jonathan, and three siblings: Ray, David and Cheryl.

The family would like to thank the staff of Brighton Home Health & Hospice for their support and care given to Michael and his family.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 8, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the Kearns Western Hills 8th Ward, 5107 South 5600 West. A viewing will be held Friday evening, December 7th, from 6-8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Road and from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the funeral services. Interment will be at the West Jordan Cemetery, 1300 West 7800 South.
