After many days of being surrounded by family, Nola Jean Olson Bunkall returned to her Heavenly Father and loving husband, David Melvin Bunkall, on Friday, May 14, 2021. Nola was born on August 8, 1928, to Malven Benhart and Arlean Hanks Olson in Salt Lake City. She graduated from East High School in 1945 and married Mel on October 14, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple. They will be celebrating their 75th anniversary together in heaven.
Nola and Mel were constant companions in “everything.” When the family was young, Nola and Mel would be out dancing every Friday night. Mom would work side by side with dad when he was working on any project. Mom was in charge of retrieving tools from the garage or the store. They made a great team.
Nola was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many positions throughout her lifetime. One of her last callings was a service mission at the SLCC Institute with her favorite companion, Mel.
Nola worked many years at Winder Dairy and retired from IML Trucking. She served as a PTA President and on many PTA Boards and worked at the Salt Lake County Election Office.
Nola and Mel enjoyed many fun travels with family. Their last adventure was to Switzerland when they were in their mid- 80’s. Family was a priority to Nola. She made sure every holiday and birthday were special. She would host wonderful parties at her home. Most importantly, she made sure everyone knew they were loved by her. Her final spoken words were to make sure to tell everyone how much she loved them and the joy they brought to her life.
Nola is the mother of six children – Corwin (Judy) Bunkall, Larry (Carolyn) Bunkall, Jeanne (Brian) Widerburg, Nancy (Vaughn) Shosted, Susan (Gregory) Smith and Brent (Tara) Bunkall. She has 28 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Nola is survived by her two sisters, Kathryn (Roger) Grooms and Marilyn Irvine; her brother, David H. (Carol) Olson; and her sister-in-law, Sondra Olson.
Nola was excited to finally go home to all those who have been waiting for her. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Lois McDonald; brother, Benhart Olson; sister-in-law, Ruby Olson; brother-in-laws, Richard McDonald and James Irvine; son-in-law, Brian Widerburg and grandson; Dallas Bunkall.
