Warren Lee Cox stepped quietly through the veil on May 3, 2021. Waiting to meet him again are his wife, Janie, his children, Faith (Ron), Jacob (Andrea), Rebecca (Matt), Rachel (Josh), Josh (Shanna), Sara (Nick), Phillip, and 25 grandchildren.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, son of Don and Helen Cox, and brother to Russ (Sharon) and Dawn (Fred). His father was in the military and the family lived in several cities, finally settling in Anchorage, Alaska. He married his sweetheart on July 3, 1970. They were sealed for time and eternity May 23, 1973, in the Salt Lake Temple.
Dad loved the outdoors of Alaska. He spent many hours taking pictures of wildlife, landscapes, and so much more. He shared this love with his children as we went on long Saturday car rides, with a picnic lunch, and his camera, frequently stopping to snap the perfect shot.....very frequently stopping.
When fall came to Alaska, Dad would grab his gun, his camera, load his backpack, and head off into the wild with his dad, brother, and brother-in-law. A true hunter providing for his family, he would bring home moose, bear, and caribou. His fishing trips would load the freezer with halibut and salmon. Sometimes the stories he would tell of his adventures were bigger than the game he would bring home. We will always remember the Sasquatch Squirrels, man eating mosquitoes, Starvation Trail, Resurrection Pass, and the many times the swamp buggy got stuck.
Service was a huge part of Dad's life. From church service to neighbor service, Dad was always willing and able to lend a helping hand. One of his favorite service opportunities was leading annual summer weeklong girl’s camps. He did this for so many years that it came to the point where the girls would ask two questions: “where are we going?” “And Is Brother Cox going?” After about twenty years, he thought it was time to give someone else a turn and said he would not go. Shortly after, the young women leaders called him and begged him to go, telling him girls were not going unless he went. Dad chose to go.
In 2012, Dad decided Alaska was getting too cold and too far from the grandchildren, so he and Mom decided to move to Utah to be closer to family. He continued the long Saturday drives tradition, the walks to and from the "duck pond", and taking pictures of flowers, wildlife, and landscapes. We were able to enjoy Sunday backyard fires with marshmallow roasts, popsicles, and ice cream. We have all been so grateful to have him close.
We will miss the long Saturday drives, the Cornish pasties, the after-church applesauce pancakes, Costco size bottles of ketchup, the 7-mile walks around Lake Spenard, and Sunday naps. Thank you for your loving example, quiet faith, and unwavering dedication to serving others.
We love you. We can't wait to see you again.
