A majority of the funeral market is turning to cremation services to honor the life and legacy of a person who has passed on. Whatever the decision, McDougal Funeral Home’s cremation services in Taylorville will memorialize your loved one.

Cremation has risen in popularity in recent years, with the percentage of people who choose cremation services increasing from 28.25% in 2014 to 44.74% in 2018, according to funeral service revenue data collected by The Cremation Association of North America (CANA). This increase is a result of more affordable costs and less restricted options for family members that choose cremation services over burial or traditional funerals.

What is cremation?

Cremation is defined as the process of reducing a body to bone fragments through the use of high heat and flame.

In many cultures, cremation is an alternative way to dispose of human remains that reduces carbon emissions from traditional burial methods as well as is less expensive for families choosing cremation services over other types of funerals or services. The cremated remains or cremains are broken down into fine ash and usually placed in an urn which may be buried, kept with the family, or scattered.

The cremation process

The cremation process is actually a complex series of processes that vary from one crematory to the next. However, it all boils down to four main parts.

1. The deceased is identified and the necessary paperwork is completed. This may include a death certificate, cremation permit, and burial transit permit. The body is also refrigerated until it’s ready for cremation.

2. The body is then prepared and placed in a container and then transferred from the mortuary to a crematory, where it will be received by trained professionals. The body is placed into the cremation chamber and then cremated.

3. Once the body is completely burned, it will be moved into a cooling chamber where all of the remaining bone fragments are ground to a fine powder using a grinding machine. The cremated remains from each person may have been from different sized bodies so this ensures that they can use an average weight for everyone and grind them down accordingly.

4. The ashes are then transferred into a container known as an urn. The cremated remains are usually placed in the family's desired vessel, whether it be made of wood or metal. There are certain guidelines that have to be followed when placing ashes into an urn so if you want more information about this process please feel free to contact us.

We offer various cremation services in Utah

Our funeral home will simplify the cremation planning process. We will guide you in making an informed choice so you can celebrate the life and dignify the death of your loved one. Our cremation services include the following:

Complete cremation services

In a complete cremation service, you have the option to hold a community gathering before or after the cremation. Similar to a traditional funeral, the cremation takes the place of the casketed burial. After completing the cremation, families have the option to scatter the remains, entomb them in a gravesite or columbarium, or retain them for safe-keeping.

Immediate cremation services

This type of cremation service often involves the immediate disposition of the loved one’s body. Before or after the services, however, we give families the opportunity to pay their final respects in a private setting.

Direct cremation

This option involves the removal and transportation of your loved one’s body directly into our care. No viewing or visitation is scheduled before the cremation and there are no services. The ashes will be placed in a temporary container or urn and returned to the family.

What is the least expensive way to be cremated?

The cheapest way to have someone cremated is to do it without any services, this is called direct cremation. This includes everything from the wake, funeral, and cremation itself. Families are able to choose this option if they want nothing more than a small memorial service with just family members present.

How long does it take for human remains to be turned into ashes?

The amount of time it takes to cremate a human body can vary, but it usually ranges from one and a half to two hours. The cremation chamber will be heated to between 1400 and 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.

What kind of container is used for the cremated remains?

The container used to hold the ashes is called an urn. Urns can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, marble, and ceramic. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well.

We offer various casket and container solutions and urns to complement your loved one’s final resting place.
