In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the burial and funeral benefits that are often afforded to US military veterans when they pass. These people have given so much to our country and our daily lives, after all, that giving back to them in some small ways makes tons of sense, and these kinds of benefits are just one example.
At McDougal Funeral Home, we're happy to offer numerous funeral programs and services to clients throughout Salt Lake City and nearby areas, including veterans and their families. We offer robust funeral planning services in addition to many burial and casket options, plus cremation services if needed. What are some of the other benefits typically afforded to US military veterans during their funeral? Here are a few to consider.
For any family of a veteran who requests it, the United States government will provide an American flag to drape over the casket or urn. This is a powerful way to honor a veteran's memory and their service to the country. The flag is then given to the family after the funeral service as a keepsake.
For many families, having the US flag present during the funeral is a very important part of the service. If you're planning a veteran's funeral and would like to request a flag, our team at McDougal can help facilitate that request on your behalf.
In many cases, the US government will cover some amount of the funeral and burial expenses for a qualifying veteran. This can include reimbursement for transportation of the body to the nearest national cemetery, which is especially helpful for families who live far away from where their loved one will be buried.
There are also some national cemeteries that will provide a free grave space and opening/closing fee for veterans, and in some cases for their spouses and/or dependent children as well. Some states also offer special benefits for veterans who are buried in state veteran cemeteries.
If you're a surviving family member of a veteran and you're interested in accessing any of the funeral benefits that may be available to you, the first step is to contact your nearest Veterans Affairs office. They will be able to help you determine what benefits you may be eligible for and how to apply for them.
Our team at McDougal Funeral Home can also help answer any questions you may have about funeral benefits for veterans. We're proud to help families in Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas honor their loved ones in a dignified and respectful way, and we're here to support you every step of the way.
